Why is Roker Pier closed?
The pier had been closed since November 2016, when gale force winds and huge waves washed more than 100 metres of railings into the sea. In August 2018, bookings for public tours of Roker Pier lighthouse and tunnel began following the complete transformation of the pier, and lighthouse over the previous six years.

Work began on the construction of a 700ft long North Pier in 1786 and was completed 10 years later in 1796.

Built between 1885 and 1903 when Sunderland was a major British port, Roker Pier & Lighthouse represented a ‘triumph of engineering’ by Henry Hay Wake, with the logistics of building the striking landmark resulting in solutions ahead of their time.
Can you walk along Roker Pier?
Guided through the unique experience by our volunteers, visitors will walk the length of the pier tunnel before climbing steps to the top of the lighthouse to take in the incredible views. Roker Heritage Group are responsible for tours of the tunnel and lighthouse only.
Is Roker pier closed today?
The pier gates are open to allow public access to Roker Pier 24/7. The gates are closed and public access is restricted in adverse weather conditions in the interest of public safety.

Where can I fish on Roker Pier?
The best fishing can often be found just behind the breakers, where there are several inviting holes. As the rest of the pier overlooks much the same terrain, it is a good idea when the conditions are right to start off at the bottom of the pier and work your way to the end until you find feeding fish.

You can walk and see Marsden Rock, and then have some refreshment in the Grotto, a pub in a cliff cave! But the lighthouse, inside see the original machinery and then climb to the top for the amazing view.
