How good of a score do you need for National Merit Scholarship?
The Selection Index has a total score range of 48-228. Each state has a slightly different qualifying score for semifinalists, ranging from 209 to 222. This means you’ll need, at minimum, a 35 test score on each of the three sections to be eligible for National Merit consideration.
What qualifies for National Merit Semifinalist?
The NMSC uses its own Selection Index to determine which students qualify as Commended Students and Semifinalists. In general, students who score in the top 3-4% are named Commended Scholars, while students who score in the top 1% are deemed Semifinalists. Students are compared on a state-by-state basis.
