What does Volsung mean Skyrim?
Volsung (Dragon Language: Vol-Sung, “Horror-[?]”) is one of the eight named Dragon Priests. His full name translates to “Horrible” in the dragon language.
Why do dragon priests wear masks?
When donned, these masks imbue you with their innate magical effects. There are eight masks to be found in the world, making eight Dragon Priests to be slain. If you manage to collect all eight, you will have the opportunity to get the ninth mask (Konahrik), which has its own quest tied to it.

Where is Volsung?
Volsung can be found in Volskygge in northwestern Skyrim. Note that you can just climb the mountain above the entrance and skip the dungeon entirely.
What happens if you lose the Wooden Mask in Skyrim?
If the mask isn’t respawning in it’s original location, then in your particular situation it’s gone for good. If it was given to a follower who died it may be on their corpse, or it’s possible they reset it to their default equipment, however you’d need the “perfect touch” perk to find out.
